Grease at the Twilight Cinema

Twilight Cinema

Ivy and I had a great night out watching the 1978 classic Grease at the Twilight Cinema. The Twilight Cinema is a portable cinema complete with projector and giant blow up screen. They are screening movies pretty much every night for the next month in Hagley Park at sunset.

The night started off with Ivy and I stuffing our huge two seater beanbag (which Ivy made) into the back of her car along with some nibbles and drink. We arrived at the park about 30 minutes early in the hopes of getting a good spot on the grass, which we did. As soon as it got dark enough they started the film, but unfortunately had forgotten to turn off the subtitles and adjust the projector to match the screen size. After a couple of minutes of re-adjusting they restarted the movie to a round of applause.

I don’t have to tell you that Grease was awesome and everyone was enjoying themselves. People were happily singing along and even breaking out some dance moves during the Grease Lightning scene. It was a great night out and I would highly recommend it to anyone. In fact go and see In Bruges there in a couple of weeks time.

In Bruges

In Bruges

In Bruges

My brother, Shen, recently went for a weekend in Bruges, a small city in Belgium. After talking to him about his exploits he reminded me of the Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson film titled In Bruges. Colin and Brendan are hitmen in hiding, with Ralph Fiennes as their gangster boss. The film of course takes place within Bruges.

The movie starts off quiet slow without much of anything happening for the first half. The comedic high light of the first half is when Colin tells a bunch of obese American tourists not to climb to the top of a famous tower because they are to fat to fit. (My brother assures me that the tower staircase gets very steep and narrow and doubts anyone of considerable girth would not be able to make it up.)

After a slow start the movie does pick up with a bunch of action scenes sprinkled with humor. The end result being a reasonably good flick worth a viewing.

The Spirit

The Spirit

The Spirit

I had great hopes for this movie. The film is based on the newspaper comic strip The Spirit by Will Eisner, and is written and directed by Frank Miller. You know the guy that did Sin City. Frank Miller has decided to use the same art direction as he did with Sin City, which makes for good viewing, but I think the story was lacking a bit. I left the cinema entertained, but thinking it could have been better, there was something missing. I haven’t read any of the original comics, so I don’t know if this is something just the movie is missing or something the comic was missing all along. Either way if you enjoyed Sin City then might as well check this out.

Pineapple Express

Movie - Pineapple Express

Ivy and I went out for some pre-Christmas drinks with Nick and his girl. After a couple we headed back to the flat and watched Pineapple Express the new Seth Rogen movie. We were already a little buzzed from the booze, so in the perfect mindset for this flick.

At first I was weary about how this movie was going to turn out. Similar movies like Superbad were awesome, but when I saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall I felt they were losing their appeal. Pineapple Express didn’t disappoint though and had even Ivy laughing the night away. So if you’re after a good comedy then give this one a go.

Super High Me

Movie - Super High Me

Movie - Super High Me

This movie is basically a take off of Super Size Me where a guy eats nothing but McDonalds for 30 days and sees how that effects his body and life, but instead of eating McDonalds he smokes marijuana.

Now, the idea of this interested me a lot. But the execution of this movie wasn’t as good as I think it could have been. To start with the guy smoking all the weed, Doug Benson, is a comedian that already smokes a lot of pot. So, right off the bat they have to do 30 days of him not smoking the wacky tabacy, so that they can do tests on him when he isn’t under the influence. Now, Doug has been a heavy smoker for the past 17 years of his life… 30 days isn’t going to make that much of a difference to the tests I don’t think. They should have gotten a guy (or girl) that has never smoked ganja before to do this. On the upside the guy is a comedian, so they show a bunch of his stand up stuff that relates around reefer, which is probably the bests parts of the movie.

Doug takes a few different tests before and after his 30 day relationship with Mary Jane; a lung capacity test, a SAT test, a sperm count test, an ESP or psychic test and he also get weighed before and after. Although this sounds like a lot, really the tests were done pretty poorly and I would have liked to have seen more health tests taken.

If you want to know how the tests turned out… well you’ll just have to watch the movie. Or google it? If dope and that sort of thing interests you then I would suggest watching Super High Me. It’s not as good as Super Size Me, but it’s worth a rental.

Prince Caspian

Movie - Prince Caspian

Movie - Prince Caspian

Prince Caspian is of course the second film in The Chronicles of Narnia series. All in all I enjoyed this movie. This might have been because of it’s own merits or it could have been because I was comparing it to the movie Don’t Mess with the Zohan which I watched last night.

From what I remember of the book they do a good job following it. For those who have not read it the movie might be a bit confusing at the start as they don’t seem to explain Prince Caspian’s position in the current hierarchy. This is explained later in the movie, so no real need to read the book first.

Like all the Narnia books, there is a huge christian undertone which seems to translate to cheesy bits of the movie. Not nearly as noticeable as in the first movie The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

If your in to fantasy flicks and bit of a blast from your childhood, then give this one a watch.

Movie - Don't Mess with the Zohan

Movie - Don't Mess with the Zohan

This is quite possibly the worst movie I have seen in the last year. The same cast we see in all of Adam’s films are back, and they still aren’t any good. The jokes are old and boring. The story is just plain stupid.

This movie is not worth the ticket price or a the cost of a rental. Hell I wouldn’t even suggest downloading it.
