Doctor’s Keep Your Oath!
March 26th, 2009 Filed under: Life | Tags: doctor, family My cousin Malcom has been having some pretty serious medical problems for some time now. For a very long time he has been having very little luck dealing with doctors and getting them to seriously look into his problems. Then his niece Alita wrote an essay for school.
When you think about who you trust in your life, who are the first people that pop to your mind? Family, friends, doctor, principal or boss? Well I put trust in people with things I know they can help me with. I to my Mom about growing up and love, I talk to my Sister about clothes and perfumes, and I will talk to my principal to excuse why I was late or absent knowing he can understand and help. Finally I put trust in my doctor to find out about my health because he knows me and that’s what he does. But what if your own doctor is someone who you put a great deal of trust in, but who does not care to listen to what’s wrong with you? You shouldn’t look for problems but when you know your own body and know something is wrong, shouldn’t your doctor be listening to your concerns? He’s the one you go to in good faith to take care of you. He should not be one that let’s you down.
Well that is exactly what has happened to my Uncle, the only person who for me in my life has been there no matter what. He has been a paraplegic since before I was born, and has had other major health problems for way longer than that. You know your body and when you believe something is wrong, there is something. This doctor never put one hand on my Uncle. He’d asked to get his blood pressure checked, the doctor would send in a nurse. Uncle would say he was having pains, the doctor would prescribe a medicine. When that didn’t work he would prescribe another, instead of checking out the problem. Now after years of being neglected and ignored my Uncle is diagnosed with cancer, putting unbearable stress on all of my family members. Making us all wonder is this just his way of diagnosing something to get my Uncle out of his face? Or does he not know what to do when a patient comes in with complaints? Putting your life in someones hands is exactly what a patient is doing when they go see a doctor, they should not be able to toy with it.
When someone is a doctor for a living that’s not a job that you work so hard to get at then when you’re there just not do it This is a matter of a doctor that doesn’t want to handle his patients because of discriminatory issues, doesn’t feel the need to, or maybe he just doesn’t know what to do. And if any of these are the case then why would he still be working there because honestly I need a trustworthy doctor, one that I can believe in to save me; not let me sit out to rot. My Uncle is so weak that he is fully dependant on people to get in and out of bed, shower, bathroom, chair, anywhere where he is not on wheels. He has been forced to proceed any task with caution, and sometimes cannot even attempt his daily routine due to the truckload of pills he has to take a day. The pills also make him out of it, to where to the point he cannot even stay awake. Sad thing is he has to load up on pills to handle the pain day to day. Just because one doctor didn’t take the time to listen to try and help when maybe he would be able to fight the disease off.
When my Uncle was driven to the Emergency Room in November, he was doubled over in pain and was passing out due to how much pain he was having in his pancreas and liver. When they were starting to detect what was wrong with him they were alarmed to realize that the pain my Uncle was in would have killed him if he wasn’t a paraplegic from the chest down. That was the last straw for our family. My Uncle is the strongest person I have ever met. The accident that got him in the wheelchair he is in today should have killed him, but still he is the only person that has kept me sane my whole life. Making me realize life is a gift, do what you need to do, and don’t listen when someone says you can’t do it. Even when you are stuck inside, knowing you could die any day. He does not deserve to die from one mans ignorance.
This doctor has let my Uncle and our entire family down. Maybe he never took the time to get to know my Uncle, to see passed his medical record or the health problems he had. But he definitely never took the time to look past his own ignorance to help someone he took an oath to help. He didn’t realize that this is what he does for a living, he needs to do it. What he has done is pretty much murder, letting someone die in the palms of your hands, letting someone die, when their name is on your patient list waiting for you to save their life. To me this is totally backwards and makes me feel so helpless in this big world, where you can’t even find good health in your own doctor.
Needless to say Malcom was very impressed with it and proud of Alita. He decided that maybe his doctor would gain some perspective by reading it, so faxed it to him. Some of the family were very upset when this happened and thought that Malcom might end up without a doctor period.
Apparently for a long time the doctor was telling the family that he was in contact and discussing Malcom with specialists, but for some reason no specialists were contacting Malcom. Funny thing is after Malcom faxed this to his doctor, a specialist contacted the family. When asked why it took them so long, they said they had just been contacted. Apparently this is also being referred to the Medical Board and this doctor has been before them before.
I’d just like to say good work Alita, sometimes even the smallest gesture like the voice of a child really can make a huge difference.

blah,blah,blah!
